During ‘Mann Ki Baat,’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi explained how the digital arrest scam works. He said that callers pretend to be police, CBI, RBI, or drug enforcement officials and speak confidently. Many people asked him to address this issue.

He outlined the scam’s steps: First, they gather your personal information. Next, they create a sense of fear to make you panic. Finally, they apply pressure to get you to act quickly. Victims come from all walks of life, and many have lost large sums of their hard-earned money.

He advised that if you receive such a call, don’t be scared. Remember, no official agency conducts interrogations over the phone or video calls.

“There are three steps for digital safety: stop, think, and act. If you can, take a screenshot or record the call. Remember, no government agency will threaten you over the phone or ask for money,” he added, according to ANI.

Modi advised people to call 1930 to reach the national cyber helpline and said that such fraud attempts should be reported to the police.

Recently, these so-called digital arrests have become a serious issue in India.

Last month, SP Oswal, the chairman of Vardhman Group, was tricked by cybercriminals into transferring ₹7 crore to their accounts after they claimed to take him into “digital custody.”

The scammers pretended to be CBI officials and kept him under “digital surveillance for two days on Skype,” saying he was a suspect in a money-laundering case.
