Ratan Tata took over as the Chairman of Tata Group after his mentor and uncle JRD Tata in 1991. He started restructuring the company when India was undergoing a sea change. Indeed, under his leadership, Tata Group grew immensely in several fields – education, health care, technology, steel, among others.

Rural and Agricultural Development
Tata remained committed to upgrading rural and agricultural development through initiatives like the Transforming Rural India Initiative (TRI). It assisted with the governments, NGOs, and community groups that labor to regain regions severely affected by poverty.

He also undertook the construction of schools and hospitals in those places and rendered huge support during natural disasters.

Disaster Relief and Social Welfare
Ratan Tata acted promptly on emergencies. He founded the Taj Public Service Welfare Trust during the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008 to assist the victims and the families of the martyrs.

An amount of ₹500 crore spent for the Covid-19 associated crisis earned him accolades from one and all as his generous gesture in his own small way helped the nation manage the scenario enormously.

Ratan Tata’s affection for dogs is well-known. The global headquarters of Tata Sons at Bombay House is home to many stray dogs that the group takes care of.

Through a passion for dogs, Ratan Tata met his assistant, Shantanu Naidu. Naidu approached Tata for support with his first startup, Motopaws-the reflective collars for street dogs.

Tata has also invested in a Goodfellows, which helps senior citizens build friendships with young graduates.

Global Philanthropy
Ratan Tata’s philanthropic activities reached beyond India as well. He donated $50 million to Harvard Business School, his alma mater, to create an executive center, as he believed in education in building future leaders.

He is also known for his work in various capacities in international organizations, including the Board of Trustees at the University of Southern California and the Dean’s Advisory Board at Harvard Business School, in line with his international commitment to education and society.

Ratan Tata is known for transforming Tata from a company focused mainly on India into a global business. Under his leadership, the Tata Group expanded rapidly and made several major acquisitions. These included Tetley for $431.3 million, Corus for $11.3 billion, and Jaguar Land Rover for $2.3 billion, along with Brunner Mond, General Chemical Industrial Products, and Daewoo for $102 million.

The company also purchased hotels, chemical firms, communication networks, and energy companies around the world. Additionally, it entered the automobile market, famously launching the Tata Nano in 2008.
